CHARITY STATUS

The Diocese of Europe TFCC was set up as a Charity with a specific Object at a meeting held on 30th March 2005 at Penhallow in Cornwall. The trustees were advised that their number should not be less than five. An account was opened by Mr. Rodney Hume as Treasurer with four nominated signatories any two of whom could authorise withdrawals from the account. This preliminary arrangement was put before the Diocesan Conference meeting on 7th May 2005 at the Beacon Hall, Peasedown St John, Bath, The action met with unanimous approval and all five Trustees were elected.

It was then possible to apply for Charitable Status to the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales. The application was based on a standard Model Constitution for a Charitable Unincorporated Association. The Trustees were advised that the original wording of the Object should be amended to read:

The Advancement of the Christian Faith, both within the UK and overseas, as defined in the attached Constitutional Canons of the Family of Catholic Churches by such exclusively charitable means as the trustees shall from time to time determine.

This amendment was approved by a Special Diocesan Meeting held at the same Beacon Hall.

On the 22nd November 2005 the Charity Commission directed that the Charity ‘The Diocese of Europe TFCC should be entered under the Number 1112209 in the Commission’s Central Register.

Great care was taken to avoid confusion with the already existing Charity maintained by the group based on Stoke on Trent. At no time was there any intention of seeking funding from outside the diocesan membership. This is a principle our sister dioceses also follow as far as their ordinary administration is concerned, Our own diocesan funds can be made available as special grants to meet an unforeseen emergency - such as the serious hurricane damage sustained by the pro-cathedral in Barranquilla, Columbia in 2006.

In general our expenses are incurred by office administration or by supporting the overseas travelling expenses of the Bishops Ordinary. Such expenses have not inhibited a steady growth in the strength of the Charity’s financial position.

The Trustees elected for the 2007-8 period are: Bishop Michael Wright (Chairman). Mrs Pamela Wright (Secretary), Mr Rodney Hume (Treasurer) Mr Michael Taylor, and Mrs Angela Hume.
