Those who use a computer know the vital importance of a ‘path’. A ‘path’ is a sequence of links by which the user can gain access to the material stored on the computer. If the ‘path’ is incorrect, it means that the chain of links is corrupt or broken and it is impossible to gain access. Something like this has happened to the Christian Churches, the links which bound together in unity the Catholic Church of the first Christian millennium have been broken or corrupted. The reality of the Church is still there but its functioning as a unity has been grievously impaired.
